As protests in Los Angelesentered their fourth day on Monday, June 9,the federal government escalated its tense standoff with California as it prepared to send in 700 Marines to assist the National Guard. While federal officials prepare to escalate their response, state officials have said they will sue the Trump administration's decision to "trample over" Gov. Gavin Newsom's authority. Trump said the guard would restore order amid mounting violent clashes between police and protesters angry at his aggressive pursuit of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. illegally. On June 9, U.S. Northern Command confirmed 700 Marines would also be sent into the city. In asocial media post,Newsom blamed Trump for the increase in unrest after three days of protests, saying, "we're suing him." "Donald Trump is creating fear and terror by failing to adhere to the U.S. Constitution and overstepping his authority. This is a manufactured crisis to allow him to take over a state militia, damaging the very foundation of our republic," Newsom said in astatement.
