
Authorities identified two people who were killed in awaterfall accidentin central Oregon as search efforts for one missing person continued on July 22. The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office identified thetwo victims who died in the accidentas Amanda Lloyd, 40, of Rockwall, Texas, and Lindsay Bashan, 33, of Parkland, Florida. Authorities were still searching for the last missing person, a male, who had not yet been identified. The accident occurred on the afternoon of July 19 when a group of six people was swept over Dillon Falls on the Deschutes River, about 10 miles southwest of the city of Bend. The group had been floating on inner tubes that were tied together when they entered the notoriously dangerous Class V rapids, according to the sheriff's office. "Dillon Falls is an extremely dangerous section of the Deschutes River, marked by a dramatic 15-foot drop and classified as a Class 5 Rapid,"the sheriff's officesaid in a statement on July 22. "It features long, violent, and obstructed sections of whitewater with rocks, logs, and other debris that pose serious hazards even to experienced paddlers." The sheriff's office said investigators learned that three people from the group, who were rescued from the scene, had jumped from their tubes and made it to shore. The other three people were swept into the rapids. The identities of the three survivors are being withheld out of respect for their privacy, authorities said. "If the final missing individual is not found today, side-scanning sonar will be brought in to assist with deeper underwater searches," the sheriff's office said. Authorities have asked the public to stay clear of the Dillon Falls area while operations are underway, noting that any interference or unintentional disruption could slow and hamper search efforts. The sheriff's office also advised people recreating on the Deschutes River to: Know the water:Understand the river or lake you're on and where it's safe to launch and take out. Watch for posted signs and warnings. Wear a life jacket:Always have a personal flotation device on you or readily available. It can mean the difference between life and death. The waterfall has also been the site of other tragedies in previous years. In 2022, a 41-year-old mandied while floating over Dillon Falls in an innertube. In 2018, a popular blind athlete from Bend and her father lost control of their canoe in the waters above Dillon Falls, resulting in the father's death,the Bend Bulletin reported.
